🌿 Don’t Let Spring Fever Ruin Your Garden: 11 Mistakes to Avoid

🌿 Don’t Let Spring Fever Ruin Your Garden: 11 Mistakes to Avoid

Spring is the season of new beginnings at Leafy Cottage! While it’s tempting to rush into the garden the moment the sun peaks out, a little patience goes a long way. To ensure your "indoor jungle" or backyard sanctuary thrives all year, avoid these 11 common spring gardening pitfalls.

1. Working on Soggy Soil

Stepping on or digging in muddy ground compacts the soil, making it hard for roots to breathe.

     - The Fix: Wait until the soil is crumbly, not sticky, before you start planting.

2. Bad Timing (Too Early or Too Late)

Planting tender greens before the last frost can be fatal, while waiting too long might stunt their growth.

    - The Fix: Always check your local frost dates and follow the specific instructions on your seed packets.

3. Skipping the "Hardening Off" Phase

Seedlings grown indoors are like pampered babies. Moving them outside abruptly can cause transplant shock.

   - The Fix: Gradually expose them to outdoor light and wind over 7–14 days.

4. Using "Hot" (Fresh) Manure

Fresh manure is too high in nitrogen and can literally burn your plants' roots.

    - The Fix: Stick to aged, composted manure for a safe nutrient boost.

5. Letting Early Weeds Slide

Tiny spring weeds turn into summer monsters overnight.

    - The Fix: Pull them early or use cardboard/tarps to smother them before they take over.

6. Overcrowding Your Plants

Plants need "personal space" for airflow. If they're too close, you're inviting pests and diseases like powdery mildew.

     - The Fix: Follow spacing guides and don't be afraid to thin out extra seedlings.

7. Mulching Too Early or Too Deep

Heavy mulch traps the winter cold in the ground, delaying growth.

    - The Fix: Wait for the soil to warm up, and keep mulch away from the direct stems/trunks of your plants.

8. Forgetting Pest Prep

Pests wake up in the spring too! Old debris can hide unwanted visitors.

     - The Fix: Clean up dead leaves once temperatures are consistently above 10°C (50°F) and set up row covers early.

9. Pruning at the Wrong Time

Pruning spring bloomers (like Lilacs) too early means you’re cutting off this year’s flowers.

     - The Fix: Only prune spring-flowering shrubs after they finish blooming.

10. Using Dirty Tools

Rusty or dirty shears spread bacteria and fungus from one plant to another.

     - The Fix: Wipe your blades with 70% isopropyl alcohol between every plant you trim.

11. Forgetting Your Labels

"Was this a tomato or a pepper?" Save yourself the guesswork!

     - The Fix: Use DIY markers or simple tags the second you put a seed in the ground.
